Steuerpodcast „Frisch serviert“: ESG Ratings (Talk with Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler, University of St. Gallen)

Peter Hongler ist Professor für Steuerrecht an der Universität St. Gallen, Direktor des IFF-HSG und Mitglied der „Tax for SDGs Initiative“ des United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Er skizziert die beiden Grundgedanken von ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance)-Ratings, die einerseits auf die Risiken abzielen, die Unternehmen auf dem Gebiet von ESG haben, und andererseits auf die positiven Einflüsse von Unternehmen auf die sog. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Die Runde diskutiert die verschiedenen Ansätze von Ratingagenturen, die Wichtigkeit von Transparenz, die Frage, ob Steuerzahlungen immer eine positive Auswirkung auf die SDGs haben, und sog. „Window Dressing“ im Zusammenhang mit ESG-Ratings.

He outlines the two rationales of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Ratings, one focused on the risks enterprises have in the area of ESG and the other focused on the positive impact of enterprises on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The participants discuss the different approaches of rating agencies, the importance of transparency, the question if paying taxes always has a good impact on the SDGs and „window dressing“ in the context of ESG Ratings.
